Kolkata As I Know It

Kolkata is capital of West Bengal, a state in the eastern fringe of India. If you are wondering why then the name of West Bengal, then because its Bengal on the western fringe of Bangladesh. Originally Bangladesh and West Bengal were together before the partition in 1947. Now West Bengal, the fourth most populous state, encompasses the Gangetic plain south of the Himalayan fringe. Kolkata is located on bank of Hooghly river, on the east side.




You must have heard of the famous Howrah Bridge as well as the VidyaSagar Setu, providing the line of contact between the city of Kolkata and the places on its western border. In fact, Howrah Bridge, a cantilever bridge is the six longest and the busiest of its kind in the World.

Kolkata also happens to be culturally and educationally an aware city. Politically as well it was and is still considered one of the most conscious cities. People around the world know of this place because of Rabidranath Tagore, Mother Teresa, Netaji and countless other famous and forward thinking reformists of all time.

As any of the metropolitan cities of India, it confronts, over population, traffic congestion and also poverty. Pollution is also growing day by day as more and more land is starting to be claimed by the city. But this is not all that you get out of this city. There are Planetariums, Museums, Entertainment hot spots, malls, multiplexes and large booming city outskirts of New Town and Rajarhat, where large and Big brands are making their presence felt.

Kolkata once belonged to the Nawabs and was also one of the principle states under the East India Company rule. So, there are remnants of many architectural brilliance from that age. You can also see a number of figure, as you go towards Esplanade and North side of Kolkata, which is the Old Kolkata for the people.

Kolkata is an amalgamation of new and old and culturally a vibrant city of India, with people coming in from all part of India and around the world to make it their home.
